Time and Attention

Tonight is the start
first time at attention
begging to be in the race
and so the lesson starts with
“Time and Attention.”

Balanced on top
both hands
remain perfectly still
simply asked to sense
the words in songs
closed eyes in darkness
she feels something placed
tied to both wrists.

Words whisper from behind
she’s asked to keep time
the start of each minute
she’ll feel a soft touch
her hands are smothered
oiled fingers with hers
keep both hands
from being interrupted.

A scent of honey lavender
coming closer
then falling away
she tries to anticipate
the next soft tap
this time a kiss
to the tip of her nose
she wants more
the ache is building.

A weight has been added
to her ribbon tied wrists
shoulders flex a little
she wants to say the words
a tap to her lips
something sweet she tastes
a few words are repeated to her.

The music gets harsh and much louder
she senses a light in the room
she worries the lesson is over
her arms are getting heavy
instantly, one of her wrists
is freed.

Unsettled uneasy
she prefers the weight back
the faintest of taps
or was it accidental?
She’s doubting her senses
words are whispered to her
Trust time and attention.

Her chin is tipped
and by instinct
she opens her mouth
a cold liquid
the most amazing sensation
the next soft tap is ice
minutes are passing pounding.

The weight tied to her wrist
crashes and slams to floor
she’s afraid to move
the glass on the floor
will certainly cut her.
Still, she keeps perfectly still
she senses the room is dark again.
She’s never been this comfortable.

The music abruptly stops
she hiccups a breath
listening to the room’s silence
wanting that voice
that’s now built up inside her
the voice says,

“Time and Attention”
Listen clearly
is always yours to guide.
I want you to tell me
how many times were you tapped
in exacting detail
tell me about the weight on wrists
give one possible reason why
finally, how many senses did you use?

She waited to gather her thoughts
eyes slowly opened
to a perfectly pristine room
nothing tied to wrists
no music or candles,
no broken glass.
Speechless,
she struggled to articulate
exactly what is was
she actually felt.
