Maui

The temperature code
insists the sky is on fire.
For the first real time
I felt your love,
that flood of emotions
overwhelmed all at once.
Trust me when I say,
I fought the tide’s pull
truth be told
the one good reason
I started listening to you
I needed to be loved.
That Hawaiian town burned
it’s so hard to believe
all the memories
we carved there
are now erased.
Heavy is my sorrowful gaze,
those sunsets,
all converted to smoke
I’ll try and squint
to remember how
it once was.
My love,
you meant the world to me
always a perfect paradise
against all else
I don’t mind
looking back
thinking of those days
when our walls
kept certain thoughts
from ever getting close.
We just always knew,
as long as we were together
in this tropical place
we’d be safe.
Today,
Maui burned herself
as some sort of protest
too little
too late
I have her love-memories
it’s time we say,
“Mahalo”
for giving us
our pristine
vacation spot.
